 It is the dried bud of Eugenia caryophllata Thunb. It is usually collected from September to March, when the buds becoem red from green. Footstalk must be removed, and dried in the sunshine. The raw one can be used.

[ Medicinal Properties ]: Pungent in flavor, warm in nature; relate to the spleen , stomach, lung and kidney merdians.

[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Warming the middle energizer to check adverse rise of qi ; expel cold and relieve pain; tonifying kidney and strengthen yang.

[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Vomiting, hiccup due to stomach cold     In treating vomiting due to stomach cold, it is usually used in combination with Banxia, Shengjiang; in treating hiccup due to deficiency-cold, it can be cobined with Renshen, Shengjiang, Shidi, such as in the formula Dingxiang Shidi Decoction; In treating syndrome of deficiency cold of spleen and stomach, manifesting as vomiting, loss appetite, diarrhea, it is often used together with Sharen, Baizhu.

2. Cold pain in epigastric abdomen   In treating for cold pain in epigastric abdomen due to congealing cold , it is usually used in combination with Gaoliangjiang, Xiaohuixiang, such as in the formula Dingxiang Zhitong Powder.

3.Impotence due to kidney deficiency      In treating syndrome of deficiency of kindey-yang, manifesting as impotence, weakness of feet, it is usually used in combination with Fuzi, Rougui, bajitian.

[ Usage ang Dosage ]: 1-3g is used for oral use.

[ Precautions ]: It is not suitable to use with Yujin together.

[ Annotations]: Mudingxiang     It is the nearly mature fruit of Eugenia caryophllata Thunb. its property , function is similar to the bud, but the force is weak and function is less. Dosage is the same as Gong-Dingxiang.

丁香为桃金娘科植物丁香Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb.的干燥花蕾。习称公丁香。主产于坦桑尼亚、马来西亚、印度尼西亚,我国主产于广东、海南等地。通常于9月至次年3月,花蕾由绿转红时采收,晒干。生用。

 【药性】辛,温。归脾、胃、肺、肾经。        【功效】温中降逆,散寒止痛,温肾助阳。       
 
【应用】        1.胃寒呕吐、呃逆。本品辛温芳香,暖脾胃而行气滞,尤善降逆,故有温中散寒、降逆止呕、止呃之功,为治胃寒呕逆之要药。常与柿蒂、党参、生姜等同用,治虚寒呕逆,如丁香柿蒂汤(《症因脉治》);与白术、砂仁等同有, 治脾胃虚寒之吐泻、食少,如丁香散(《沈氏尊生书》);治妊娠恶阻,可与人参、藿香同用(《证治准绳》)。      
 
  2.脘腹冷痛。本品温中散寒止痛,可用治胃寒脘腹冷痛,常与延胡索、五灵脂、橘红等同用。      
 
  3.阳痿,宫冷。本品性味辛温,入肾经,有温肾助阳起痿之功,可与附子、肉桂、淫羊藿等同用。       
 
【用法用量】煎服,1~3g。外用适量。        【使用注意】热证及阴虚内热者忌用。畏郁金。       
 
【古籍摘要】        1.《日华子本草》:“治口气,反胃,疗肾气,奔豚气,阴痛,壮阳,暖腰膝。”       
 
2.《本草正》:“温中快气。治上焦呃逆,除胃寒泻痢、七情五郁。”       
 
 3.《得配本草》:“丁香,得五味子治奔豚,配甘蔗、姜汁治干呕。”       
 
 【现代研究】        1.化学成分:含挥发油16%~19%,油中主要成分是丁香油酚、乙酰丁香油酚,微量成分有丁香烯醇、庚酮、水扬酸甲脂、α-丁香烯、胡椒酚、苯甲醇、苯甲醛等。      
 
  2.药理作用:本品内服能促进胃液分泌,增强消化力,减轻恶心呕吐,缓解腹部气胀,为芳香健胃剂;其水提物、醚提物均有镇痛抗炎作用;丁香酚有抗惊厥作用;其煎剂对葡萄球菌、链球菌及白喉、变形、绿脓、大肠、痢疾、伤寒等杆菌均有抑制作用,并有较好的杀螨作用;另有抗血小板聚集、抗凝、抗血栓形成、抗腹泻、利胆和抗缺氧等作用。       
 
 3.临床研究:丁香5g,郁金、旋覆花(包煎)各10g,柿蒂5个,代赫石(包煎)15g,治疗呃逆32例,均获显效(上海中医药杂志,1990,2:37);丁香1.5g,肉桂3g,共研细末,用水调成糊状,贴于脐上,治疗小儿腹泻120例,总有效率99%(中国民间疗法,1998,6:21);丁香、厚朴各4g,薄荷2g,用开水浸泡15分钟,滤去药渣后含漱,治疗牙痛11例,总有效率为100%(黑龙江中医药,1991,2:53);丁香油5ml,调三七粉2~3g,为糊,外敷,治疗腮腺炎32例,均4~6天痊愈(中国乡村医药,1999,4:17)。另有用丁香治疗急性胃肠炎、乙型肝炎、痹证、头痛、妊娠呕吐、足癣、口腔溃疡等。      
 
  附药 母丁香        为丁香的成熟果实,又名鸡舌香。性味功效与公丁香相似,但气味较淡,功力较逊。用法用量与公丁香同。
