The souce is from fruit of Chaenomeles speciosa (sweet) Nakai, family Rosaceae. The medicinal quality from Xuancheng in Anhui Province is the best. It is collected when the fruit becomes green and yellow in the summer and autumn. It is boiled until the skin becomes grey and split in half and dried in the sun, being cut into peices for use.

[ Medicinal Properties ]: Sour, warm; relate to liver and spleen meridians.

[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Soothe tendons and activate collaterals; harmonize stomach and resolve dampness.

[ Usage and Dosage ]: 6-9 g.

[ Precautions ]: Contraindicated in interrior heat, with scanty and red urine.
 
[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Bi-syndroe of wind-dampness      It is the most significant medicinal to treat bi-syndrome of dampnesss and spasms of tendons because it is good at soothing tendons, activating collaterals and resolving dampness. For spasm of tendons and stiff neck, it can be in cominatin with Ruxiang, Moyao and Shengdihuagn, etc.,such as in Mugua Decoction. For pain and heaviness of feet and knees and incapability of walking and standing long, it can be used together with Qianghuo, Duhuo and Fuzi, etc.
 
2. Barbiers and edema    It is usually used together with Wuzhuyu, Binglang and Zisuye, etc., such as in Jiming Powder.
 
3. Twitch with Vomiting and diarrhea     It is suitable for abdominal pain and twitch with vomiting and Diarrhea. If cold is predominant, it is in combination with Wuzhuyu, Xiaohuixiang and Zishu, etc., such as in Mugua Decoction; if heat is predominant, it is in combination with Chansha, Yiyiren and Huanglian, etc, such as in Chanshi Decoction.
 
In addition , it can help digestion and stimulate fluid secretion to relieve thirst.

木瓜为蔷薇科植物贴梗海棠Chaenomeles speciosa(Sweet)Nakai的干燥近成熟果实。习称“皱皮木瓜”。主产于安徽、四川、湖北、浙江等地。安徽宣城产者称“宣木瓜”,质量较好。夏、秋二季果实绿黄时采收,置沸水中烫至外皮灰白色,对半纵剖,晒干。切片,生用。
      
【药性】酸,温。归肝、脾经。       
 
【功效】舒筋活络,和胃化湿。       
 
【应用】        1.风湿痹证。本品味酸入肝,益筋和血,善舒筋活络,且能去湿除痹,尤为湿痹,筋脉拘挛要药,亦常用于腰膝关节酸重疼痛。常与乳香、没药、生地同用,治筋急项强,不可转侧,如木瓜煎(《普济本事方》)。与羌活、独活、附子配伍,治脚膝疼重,不能远行久立者,如木瓜丹(《传信适用方》)       
 
 2.脚气水肿。本品温通,去湿舒筋,为脚气水肿常用药,多配吴茱萸、槟榔、苏叶等,治感受风湿,脚气肿痛不可忍者,如鸡鸣散(《朱氏集验方》)。       
 
 3.吐泻转筋。本品温香入脾,能化湿和胃,湿去则中焦得运,泄泻可止;味酸入肝,舒筋活络而缓挛急。治湿浊中焦之腹痛吐泻转筋,偏寒者,常配吴茱萸、茴香、紫苏等,如木瓜汤(《三因方》);偏热者,多配蚕沙、薏苡仁、黄连等,如蚕矢汤(《霍乱论》)。       
 
 此外,本品尚有消食作用,用于消化不良;并能生津止渴,可治津伤口渴。       
 
【用法用量】煎服,6~9g。        【使用注意】内有郁热,小便短赤者忌服。       
 
【古籍摘要】        1.《名医别录》:“主湿痹邪气,霍乱大吐下,转筋不止。”        2.《本草经疏》:“木瓜温能通肌肉之滞,酸能敛濡满之湿,则脚气湿痹自除也。霍乱大吐下、转筋不止者,脾胃病也,夏月暑湿饮食之邪,伤于脾胃则挥霍撩乱,上吐下泻,甚则肝木乘脾,而筋为之转也。酸温能和脾胃,固虚脱,兼入肝而养筋,所以能疗肝脾所生之病也。”       
 
【现代研究】        1.化学成分:本品含齐墩果酸,苹果酸,枸橼酸,酒石酸以及皂苷等。       
 
 2.药理作用:木瓜混悬液有保肝作用;新鲜木瓜汁和木瓜煎剂对肠道菌和葡萄球菌有明显的抑菌作用;其提取物对小鼠艾氏腹水癌及腹腔巨噬细胞吞噬功能有抑制作用。       
 
3.临床研究:每日服木瓜片(每片0.25g,相当生药1.13g)5片,每日3次,治疗急性细菌性痢疾107例,有效率96.26%(中华医学杂志,1984,11:689);用木瓜提取浸膏制成肝灵冲剂,每次15g,每日3次,治疗急性病毒性肝炎102例,总有效率95.1%(中医杂志,1988,10:738);用木瓜、甘草各30g,水煎洗脚,治疗脚癣47例,均获痊愈(山东中医杂志,1984,2:36)。另用木瓜等治疗破伤风、粘连性肠梗阻、小儿泌尿系感染等有效。       
 
【其他】除上述品种外,同属植物榠楂 C. sinensis(Thouin) koehne 的果实作木瓜用,称光皮木瓜。此外,毛叶木瓜 C. cathayensis(Hemsl.) Schneid.、西藏木瓜 C. thibetica Yü在某些地区也作木瓜使用。
