 It is the dried root of Aucklandia lappa Decne, family Compositae. The roots are dug and collected in autumn and winter.Afterthe fibrous roots are removed, they are cut into segments and bumped the rough bark away after being dried. The raw or roasted are used for medication.

[ Medicinal Properties ]: Pungent,bitter and warm; relate spleen, stomach, large intestine, triple energizer and gallbladder meridians.

[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Promote qi flow to stop pain; regulate the middle energizer.

[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Spleen and stomach qi stagnation syndromes      For epigastric swelling pain and hiccups, it is combined with Sharen and Huoxiang in Muxiang Tiaoqi Powder; for qi deficiency of spleen and stomach, distension and fullness in epigastric abdomen, poor appetite and loose stools, with Chenqi, Dangshen and Baizhu, such as Xiangsha Liujunzi Decoction.

2. Large intestine qi stagnation syndrome     For retention in large intestine and dysentery with tenesmus, it is used with Bingliang, Zhishi and Dahuang, such as Muxiang Binglang Pills; for damp-heat manifested as dysentery with abdominal pain, usually with Huanglian in Xianglian pills.

3. Liver and gallbladder qi stagnation     It is combined with Yinchen, Yujin and Chaihu to treat failure of liver to disperse and purge, steaming fever due to damp-heat, distending pain of hypochondrium, bitter taste in mouth, yellowish tongue coating and jaundice.

In addition, used with tonifying medicinals , it can tonify but not stagnate.

[ Usage and Dosage ]: 1.5-6g. The raw are used to promote qi flow, and the roasted are used to relieve diarrhea.

[ Precautions ]: Since it is pungent, warm , fragrant and dry, it should be used with caution for hyperactive fire due to yin deficiency.

木香 为菊科植物木香 Aucklandia lappa Decne.、川木香 Vladimiria souliei (Franch.)Ling的根。木香产于印度、巴基斯坦、缅甸者,称为广木香,现我国已栽培成功。主产于云南、广西者,称为云木香;主产于四川、西藏等地者称川木香。秋、冬二季采挖,除去泥沙及须根,切段,大的再纵剖成瓣,干燥后撞去粗皮。生用或煨用。

【药性】辛、苦,温。归脾、胃、大肠、胆、三焦经。        【功效】行气止痛,健脾消食。       
 
【应用】        1.脾胃气滞证。本品辛行苦泄温通,芳香气烈而味厚,善通行脾胃之滞气,既为行气止痛之要药,又为健脾消食之佳品。治脾胃气滞,脘腹胀痛,可单用本品或配砂仁、藿香等同用,如木香调气散(《张氏医通》);若脾虚气滞,脘腹胀满、食少便溏,可与党参、白术、陈皮等同用,如香砂六君子汤(《时方歌括》)、健脾丸(《证治准绳》);若脾虚食少,兼食积气滞,可配砂仁、枳实、白术等同用,如香砂枳术丸(《摄生秘剖》)。       
 
 2.泻痢里急后重。本品辛行苦降,善行大肠之滞气,为治湿热泻痢里急后重之要药。常与黄连配伍,如香连丸(《和剂局方》);若治饮食积滞之脘腹胀满、大便秘结或泻而不爽,可与槟榔、青皮、大黄等同用,如木香槟榔丸(《儒门事亲》)。       
 
 3.腹痛胁痛,黄疸,疝气疼痛。本品气香醒脾,味辛能行,味苦主泄,走三焦和胆经,故既能行气健脾又能疏肝利胆。用治脾失运化、肝失疏泄而致湿热郁蒸、气机阻滞之脘腹胀痛、胁痛、黄疸,可与郁金、大黄、茵陈等配伍;若治寒疝腹痛及睾丸偏坠疼痛,可与川楝子、小茴香等同用,如导气汤(《医方简义》)。       
 
 4.气滞血瘀之胸痹。本品辛行苦泄,性温通行,能通畅气机,气行则血行,故可止痛。用治寒凝气滞心痛,可与赤芍、姜黄、丁香等同用,如二香散(《经验良方》);若治气滞血瘀之胸痹,可配郁金、甘草等同用,如颠倒木金散(《医宗金鉴》)。       
 
 此外,本品气芳香能醒脾开胃,故在补益方剂中用之,能减轻补益药的腻胃和滞气之弊,有助于消化吸收,如归脾汤(《济生方》)。       
 
【用法用量】煎服,1.5~6g。生用行气力强,煨用行气力缓而实肠止泻,用于泄泻腹痛。       
 
【古籍摘要】        1.《日华子本草》:“治心腹一切气,膀胱冷痛,呕逆反胃,霍乱泄泻痢疾,健脾消食,安胎。”       
 
 2.《本草纲目》:“木香乃三焦气分之药,能升降诸气。”       
 
 3.《本草求真》:“木香,下气宽中,为三焦气分要药。然三焦则又以中为要……中宽则上下皆通,是以号为三焦宣滞要剂。”       
 
【现代研究】        1.化学成分:云木香含挥发油。油中成分为紫杉烯、α-紫罗兰酮、木香烯内酯、α及β木香烃、木香内酯、二氢脱氢木香内酯、木香醇、水芹烯等。有机酸成分有棕榈酸、天台乌药酸,其它还有甘氨酸、瓜氨酸等20种氨基酸及胆胺、木香碱等成分。      
 
  2.药理作用:木香对胃肠道有兴奋或抑制的双向作用,能促进消化液分泌,木香单味药能通过胃肠蠕动加快、促进胃排空,明显拮抗大鼠急性胃粘膜损伤,溃疡抑制率达100%;有明显的利胆作用;有松弛气管平滑肌作用;并能抑制链球菌、金黄色与白色葡萄球菌的生长;有利尿及促进纤维蛋白溶解等作用。       
 
3.临床研究:以柴胡、木香、瓜蒌仁、半夏、枳壳等治疗慢性萎缩性胃炎34例,总有效率为94%(黑龙江中医药,1987,6:46);以香参止泻方(广木香10g、苦参30g)治疗急性腹泻96例,总有效率为97.9%(湖北中医杂志,1992,6:9);以茵陈、金钱草、木香、柴胡、枳壳、等,水煎服,治疗胆石症,排石率在60%以上(山东中医杂志,1996,2:64);以利胆通腑胶囊(生大黄、木香各1.7g,天仙子lg)治疗胆绞痛开水送服,总有效率71.76%(实用中医内科杂志,1988,3:115);
 
另有单用木香治疗无黄疸型肝炎、迁延型肝炎,用木香为主的复方治疗胆囊炎、小儿肠炎、细菌性痢疾、肠绞痛、肠胀气、消化性溃疡、腹泻型肠道易激综合征、痛经等。
