Stomach-Clearing Powder( Qing wei san)

【 INGREDIENTS】:Chinese angelica root 6g, Coptis root 3〜6g, Rehmannia root 6g, Moutan bark lOg, Cimicifuga rhizome 6g
[DIRECTIONS]:Decoct the above herbs in water for oral administration.
[EFFECTS]:Clearinng the stomach and cooling blood.
[INDICATIONS ]: Accumulated heat in the stomach manifested by headache radiated from toothache with aversion to heat and predilection for cold, feverish cheek; or ulceration in the gum; or gingival atrophy with oozing of blood; or swelling and soreness of the tongue, lips and cheeks; or hot and foul breath, dryness of mouth and tongue, red tongue with yellow coating, slippery, large and rapid pulse.
[ANALYSIS OF FORMULA]:Being bitter flavor and cold nature, coptis root as the main herb specially clears away heat and fire from the heart and stomach. As the assistant herbs, rehmannia root cools blood and nourishes yin; moutan bark cools blood and dissipates stasis. Chinese angelica root as the adjuvant herb nourishes and harmonizes blood to relieve swelling and pain. As the dispatcher herb, cimicifuga rhizome can disperse fire-poison as well as guiding herbs to the Yang- ming Meridian. This formula is particularly for toothache. It can be applied to the syndrome of stomach heat and blood heat with fire stagnation by means of modifications. For constipation, rhubarb could be added to induce heat downwards.
In the present clinic, it is applied to stomatitis, periodontitis and trigeminal neuralgia pertaining to flaming-up of the stomach-fire.
