It is the dried tuber of Sparganium stoloniferum Buch. Ham.,family Sparganiaceae. It is harvested and collected in winter and spring. After, it is washed clean, peeled and dired in the sunshine. Then, it is moistened thoroughly and cut into pieces. The raw or the stir-baked with vinegar form is ustilized as a medicine.
[ Medicinal Properties ]: Pungent, bitter and neutral; relate to liver and spleen meridians.
[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Break blood stasis and move qi; eliminate stagnation and alleviate pain.
[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Stagnation of qi and blood stasis causing amenorrhea and abdominal pain and mass It has the same action as that of Ezhu and they are often used together for mutual reinforcement. The difference is that Sanleng is efficacious in dissipating and removing blood stasis, while Ezhu in dissipating stagnated qi.
2. Stagnation of food with fullness and pain in epigastric abdomen It is usually combined with Ezhu, Qingpi and Maiya. For this syndrome accompanied by deficiency of the spleen and the stomach, it is combined with Dangshen and Baizhu.
[ Usage and Dosage ]: 4.5-9g. The prepared with vinegar form can reinforce the action of alleviating pain.
[ Precautions ]: It is contraindicated in women with excessive menstruation and in pregant women.
