It is the refined product of mineral Alunite of sulphate , mainly containing potassium aluminium sulfate (KAl(SO₄)₂*12H₂O). The medicinal material can be dug and collected all the year round. After the alunite is dissolved in the water, it is filtered, heated and concentrated, the crystal can be separated out and obtained after being cooled. The raw or calcined form is used for medication.

[Medicinal Properties]: Sour, astringent and cold; relate to the lung, spleen, liver and large intestine meridians.

[Medicinal Efficacies]: Clear away toxin and kill parasites; absorb dampness to relieve itching when externally used; stop bleeding and diarrhea; dispel wind-phlegm when used internally used.

[Clinical Applications]:

1. Eczema with itching, pyocutaneous disease, acariasis, tinea This medicinal has the property of dry, sour, and astringent, and it is good at absorbing dampness to alleviate itching. It can treat the dampness and ulceration of sore surface or with itching. It can be used alone, or together with Liuhuang, Xionghuang and Bingpian. 

      2. Haematemesis, hematochezia, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, prolonged diarrhea and dysentery This medicinal has astringent hemostatic action both for internal and external use, and can treat several kinds of hemorrhage syndrome. For epistaxis, it can be used alone by blowing its powder to nose; in treating for fresh blood without end in stool, it can be used with Paojiang; with its function of astringing intestines and stopping diarrhea, it can treat for prolonged diarrhea and dysentery, it can be used in combination with Weihezi and Wubeizi. 

      3. Phlegm syncope, depressive psychosis, mania, epilepsy It is often used in combination with Yujin, such as in the formula Baijin Pill.

      In addition, this medicinal has the function of eliminating dampness and treating jaundice, it is indicated for jaundice due to damp-heat, and other syndrome of hemorrhoids, rectocele and prolapse of uterus.

[Usage and Dosage]: 0.6-1.5g. It is processed into pills or powder. Its amount should be proper for external applications, it can be used to the local area by washing after being dissolved, or its powder can be applied to the local area or mixed with water.

[Precautions]: it is contraindicated for syndrome in those patients with debility and deficiency of the stomach or those without damp-heat and phlegm-fire.

[Side Effects]: Concentrated alum solution may irritate mucous membrane of the skin obviously, taking a large dose for oral use may cause burns of oral cavity, and throat, vomiting, diarrhea, collapse, even death.

白矾为硫酸盐类矿物明矾石经加工提炼制成，主含含水硫酸铝钾[KAl（SO4）2·12H2O]。主产于安徽、浙江、山西、湖北等地。全年均可采挖。将采得的明矾石用水溶解，滤过，滤液加热浓缩，放冷后所得结晶即为白矾。生用或煅用。煅后称枯矾。
