It is the rhizome of Imperata Cylindrica Beauv. var major(Nees) C. E. Hubb.,family Gramineae. It is dug and collected during spring and autumn, fibrous roots removed, washed clean and dried in the sun, cut into segments. It is utilized in its raw form.

[ Medicinal Properties ]: Sweet, cold; relate to lung, stomach and bladder meridians.

[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Cool the blood and stop bleeding; clear away heat and promote diuresis; clear away heat in the lung and the stomach.

[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Blood heat causing bleeding        It can cool the blood and stop bleeding and is efficient for bleeding of the upper and lower parts of the body. It also has the actions of clearing away the heat in the liver and the stomach, and of promoting diuresis, therefore, it is especially efficient for hematemesis, emptysis, hematuria and blood straguria. It can be taken orally decocted or smashed into juice alone or combined with other hemostatic medicinal to enhance to effect.

2. Stranguria of the heat type, edema        It is the best medicinal for these two kinds of confitions: stranguria of heat type and edema. For stranguria of heat type, it ican be combined with medicinals that can clear away heat, promote diureisis, and relieve stranguria. In case of edema it can be combined together with edema-alleviation diuretics.

3. Stomach-heat causing vomiting and lung-heat causing cough      It is able to treat vomiting through clearing away stomach-heat, and to relieve cough through clearing away lung-heat as well. For vomiting, it is usually combined with Gegen, such as in the Maogen Decoction. Yet, for cough, it is often combined with Sangbaipi.

[ Usage and Dosage ]: 9-30g or 30-60g of the fresh.

白茅根为禾本科植物白茅Imperata cylindrica Beauv. var. major (Nees) C. E. Hubb.的根茎。全国各地均有产,但以华北地区较多。春、秋二季采挖，除去须根及膜质叶鞘，洗净，晒干，切段生用。
