Pinellia, Bighead Atractylodes and Gastrodia Decoction ban xia bai zhu tian ma tang

[SOURCE]: Medicine Comprehended

[INGREDIENTS]:Pinellia tuber 9g,  Gastrodia tuber 6g, Tangerine peel 6g, Bighead atractylodes rhizome 15g,  icorice root 4g, Fresh ginger 1 pcs,  Chinese date 2 pcs.

[DIRECTIONS]: Decoct all the above herbs in water for oral administration.

[EFFECTS]:Drying dampness and reslving phlegm, soothing the liver to stop endogenous wind.

[INDICATIONS]: Syndrome of up-stirring of wind-phlegm marked by dizzi­ness, headache, stuffy chest, nausea, vomiting，white and greasy tongue coating taut and slippery pulse.   

[ANALYSIS OF FORMULA]: It is a common formula for treatment of dizziness and headache due to wind-phlegm. Pinellia tuber is used to dry dampness to re­solve phlegm, and lower the adverse qi to stop vomiting. Gastrodia tuber is taken to resolve phlegm and arrest wind to relieve vertigo. The combination of these two herbs plays a very important role in treatment of dizziness and headache due to wind-phlegm. They are principal herbs in the formula. Just as doctor Li Gao said： “One can't get a good result for Jueyin headache due to phlegm-retention without using pinellia tuber, while one can’t get a curative effect for vertigo due to endogenous wind winthout gastrodia tuber”. Bighead atractylodes rhizome, as an assis­tant herb, invigorates the spleen to dry dampness and assists the principal herbs in eliminating dampness to resolve phlegm and relieving vertigo. Poria strengthens the spleen and exeretes dampness. Tangerine peel regulates qi to resolve phlegm. Fresh ginger and Chinese date regulate the spleen and stomch. All of them act as adjuvant herbs. Licorice root as a dispatcher herb harmonizes the middel and mod­erates the other herbs in the formula. 

This formula can be used for aural vertigo, functional disturbance of vegeta­tive nervous system cerebral arteriosclerosis, cerebrovascular accident and other disorders manifested as the above syndromes.
