This medicinal is the dried root of Glehnia littoralis Fr. Schmidt ex Miq.(Fam.Umbelliferae). It is excavated in summer and autumn. After being washed clean, it is dried by natural sunlight immediately, or it is peeled and then dried by natural sunlight, after which it is scalded in boiling water.

 [ Medicinal Properties ]: Sweet, slightly bitter, slightly cold; relate to lung and stomach meridians.

[ Medicial Efficacies ]: Nourish yin; clear lung heat; reinforce the stomach and promote fluid production.

[ Clinical Applications ]: . Lung yin deficiency syndrome    To treat dry cough with little sputum, hemoptysis or dry throat with hoarse voice, due to yin deficiency with dryness-heat in the lung, it is used in combinatio with Maidong, xingren and Sangye.

2. Stomach yin deficiency syndrome   It is used to treat dry mouth with excessive drinking, hunger without desire for food, dry stools, exfoliative tongue coating , or red togue with scanty fluid, gastric pain or distension and vomiturition. If these symptoms are due to stomach yin deficiency with interior heat, it is used in combination with Shihu, Yuzhu and Wumei. In treating stomach yin deficiency and spleen qi deficiency concomitantly , it is often prescribed with Shanyao ad Taizishen.

[ Usage and Dosage ]: 4.5-9g.

[ Precautions ]: it is incompatible with Lilu.

[ Annotation ]: Nan SHa shen 南沙参 This medicinal is the root of Adenophora tetraphylla (Thunb.)Fisch or Adenophora. stricta Miq. (Fam. Campanulaceae). It is sweet, slightly cold, relates to the lung and stomach meridians, with the actions of nourishing yin and clearing lung heat, resolving phlegm and replenishing qi. It is indicated for lung yin deficiency syndrome and especially appropriate for lung dryness with sticky phlegm, difficult to expectorate phlegm and for damage to qi and yin. In additon, it is also indicated for stomach yin deficiency syndrome and especially for the advanced stage of febrile disease, encompassing deficiency of both qi and yin, with lingering heat and being unable to tolerate treatment with warm-tonics. The dosage is 9-15g. It is incompatible with Lilu.

北沙参为伞形科植物珊瑚菜Glehnia littoralis Fr. Schmidt ex Miq.的根。主产于山东、江苏，福建等地亦产。夏秋两季采挖，洗净，置沸水中烫后，除去外皮，干燥，或洗净后直接干燥。
