It is the dried ripe kernel of Platyeladus Prientalis(L.)Franco, family Cupressaceae. The ripe seeds are collected in autumn and winter and dried in the sun. The kernels are collected after the spermoderm is got rid of . It is made into pieces when used. It is wrapped with papter to be heated slightly and squeezed to remove oil, thus Baizirenshuang is got.

[ Medicinal Properties ]: Sweet and neutral; relate to heart, kidney and large intestine meridians.

[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Nourish heart and calm mind; moisten intestines to release bowels.

[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Palpitation, insomnia      For failure of blood to nourish heart resulting in vexation, insomnia, fright palpitation, it is usually used with Suanzaoren, Wuweizi and Fuling, such as Yangxin Decoction. For night sweating, it is combined with Renshen, Muli and Wuweizi, such as Baiziren Pill.

2. Intestinal dryness with constipation      For yin deficiency and insufficient blood leading to intestinal dryness with constipation, it is usually combined with Huomaren and Yuliren in Wuren Pill.

[ Usage and Dosage ]: 3-9g.

[ Precautions ]: It is used with caution for patients with loose stools and profuse sputum.

[ Medicinal Comparison ]: Similarites: Suanzaoren and Baiziren are sweet, neutral and effective for nourishing heart and calming mind, so they are usually combined together for mutual reinforcement to treat yin and blood deficiency and failure of nourishment of the heart. They treat manifestations such as palpitation, insomnia and amnesia.

Differences:Suanzaoren is very effective for nourishing liver blood and calming mind and also for treating spontaneous sweating and night sweating due to weak constitution, as it is sour and can stop excessive perspiration. Baiziren is usually used to nourish heart blood and also moisten intestines to release bowels so as to treat constipation due to intestinal dryness because it is moistening and oily.

柏子仁为柏科植物侧柏Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco的种仁。主产于山东、河南、河北，此外陕西、湖北、甘肃、云南等地亦产。冬初种子成熟时采收，晒干，压碎种皮，簸净，阴干。生用。
