It is the dried bulb of Tritillaria cirrhosa D.Don, Fritillaria unibracteata Hsiao et K.C.Hsia, Fritillaria przewalskii Maxim., or Fritillaria delavayi Franch.,family Liliaceae. Those growing in Sichuan province are superior in quality. The bulbs are dug and collected in summer and winter or when snow melts. After the fibrous roots, bark, mud and sand are removed, they are dried in the sunshine or in low temperature.

[ Medicinal Properties ]: Bitter , sweet and slightly cold; relate to lung and heart meridians.

[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Clear heat and resolve phlegm; moisten lung and relieve cough; dissipate mass and relieve swelling.

[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Chronic cough due to lung deficiency, dry cough due to lung heat      In combination with Sharen and Maidong, it treats lung deficiency and yin deficiency causing chronic cough with sputum. To treat lung heat resulting in dry cough, it is usually combined with Zhimu in Ermu Powder.

2. Scrofula, carbuncle, mammary abscess, pulmonary abscess       For scrofula, it is combined with Xuanshen and Muli in Xiaoluo Pills; for carbuncle and mamary abscess, with Pugongying, Tianhuafen and Lianqiao; for pulmonary abscess, with Yuxingcao, Xianlugen and Yiyiren.

[ Usage and Dosage ]:3-9g. It is ground into powder and taken after it is infused, with 1-2g for each time.

[ Precautions ]: It is incompatible with Wutou.

川贝母为百合科植物川贝母 Fritillaria cirrhosa D.Don，暗紫贝母F。unibracteata Hsiao et K． C. Hsia，甘肃贝母 p． przewalskii Maxim．或梭砂贝母 F． delavayi Franch．的鳞茎。前三者按不同性状习称“松贝”和“青贝”；后者称“炉贝”。主产于四川、云南、甘肃等地。夏、秋二季采挖，除去须根，粗皮，晒干，生用。
