It is the magnetic iron magnetite, mainly contains Fe3o4. It is mined at any tie and got rid of the impurity of stone. It is used in raw form or quenched with vinegar and ground into powder for mediciation.

[ Medicinal Properties] : Salty and cold; relate to liver, heart and kidney meridians.

[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Calm mind; pacify liver to subdue yang; improve auditory and visual acuity; improve inspiration and relieve dyspnea.

[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Irritability, fright palpitation, insomnia and epilepsy      In combination with Zhusha in Cizhupills, it treats yin deficiency leading to hyperactivity of yang, up-flaming of liver fire, disturbance of mind, qi disorder due to fright and mental derangement manifested as irritability, fright palpitation, insomnia and epilepsy.

2. Liver yang hyperactivity manifested as dizziness and headache     It is combined with Shijueming and Baishao.

3. Yin deficiency of liver and kidney causing tinnitus, deafness, blurred vision     For tinnitus and deafness, it is used with Shudihuang, Shanzhuyu and Wuweizi; for blurred vision, Cizhu Pills can  be used in combination with Medicinals for tonifying liver and kidney. There are clinical reports in recent years that Cizhu Pills can improve eyesight of some patients with cataract.

3. Failure of kidney to receive qi resulting in dyspnea of deficiency type     It is used with Daizheshi, Wuweizi and Hetaoren.

[ Usage and Dosage ]: 9-30g, decoct first; if used in pill orpowder form, 1-3g each time. The raw are used to induce sedation and tranquilization, pacify liver and subdue yang; and the quenched with vinegar are used to improve auditory and visual acuity and improve qi reception to relieve dyspnea.

[ Precautions ]: Since it is not easily digested, it is usually used in pill or powder form avoiding large dosage or prolonged using, and it is used with caution for patients with deficiency of spleen and stomach.

[ Medicinal Comparison ]: Similarties :Both Zhusha and Cishi are heavy and cold, attributive to the heart meridian with the function of relieving palpitation and calming spirit.

Differences:Zhusha can relieve palpitation and clear away heart fire to calm spitrit and mainly treats irritability due to exuberance of heart fire; it also removes heat and toxin to treat carbuncle, sore throat and aphthae. Cishi can tonify kidney yin and subdue liver yang, so it mainly treats kidney deficiency and liver hyperactivity and disturbance of heart by liver fire causing irritability and hyperactivity of liver yang causing diszziness; it can also improve auditory and visual acuity and improve qi reception to relieve dyspnea, so it treats kidney deficiency with tinnitus and deafness, insufficiency of liver and kidney causing blurred vision and kidney deficiency resulting in dyspnea.
