This medicinal is the dried root or rhizome of Acanthopanax senticosus Harms (Fam. Araliaceae). It is collected in spring and autumn. After being washed clean, dried and macerated, it is sliced, dried by natural sunlight and used in its unprocessed form.

[ Medicinal Properties ]: Sweet, slightly bitter, warm; relate to spleen, lung, heart,and Kidney meridians.

[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Replenish qi to invigorate spleen; tonify kidney and induce tranquilization.

[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Syndrome of spleen-lung qi deficiency      This medicinal has a mild action of dispelling phlegm and relieving dyspnea. To treat syndrome of spleen-lung deficiency manifested as lassitude, lack of strength, anorexia, prolonged cough with dyspnea, it is used in combination with Taizishen, Wuweizi and Baiguo.

2. Kidney deficiency syndrome, soreness in the kness and lumbus     It is combined with Duzhong, Sangjisheng to treat soreness in the knees and lumbus, due to the failure of insufficient kidney yang to warm and nourish tendons and bones. It also treats impotence, infantile moving retardation, arthralgia due to wind-dampness, accompanied by insufficiency of liver and kidney.

3. Heart and spleen insufficiency, insominia and amnesia      In this case, it is used in combination with prepared Shouwu, Suanzaoren, Yuanzhi and Shichangpu.

[ Usage and Dosage ]: 9-27g.

刺五加科植物刺五加Acanthopanax senticosus (Rupr. Et Maxim.) Harms的根茎或茎。主产于辽宁、吉林、黑龙江、河北、山西等地。春秋二季采挖，洗净、干燥，润透，切厚片，晒干，生用。
