This medicinal is the dried root of Angellica sinensis(Oliv.)Diels.(Fam.Umbelliferac). The one, which is mainly produced in Min County in the southeast of Gansu Province, is of the best quality. It is excavated in the late autumn. After removal of top of root and fibrous root and partial evaporation of root moisture, those of similar size are bound in small bundles, and smoked dry on slow fire or with sulfur to avoid moth and mildew. It is sliced and used in itsunprocessed form or stir-baked with liquor.
[ Medicinal Propertes ]: Sweet and pungent, warm; relate to liver, heart and spleen meridians.
[ Medicinal Efficacies]: Tonfiy blood, activate blood, regulate menstruation to relieve pain, moisten the bowels to relieve constipation.
[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Blood deficiency syndrome It is the most essential medicinal for treating blood deficiency syndrome. In this case, it is often combined with Huangqi, as in the Danggui Buxue Decoction.
2.Irregular menstruation, amenorrhea and menorrhagia To treat irregular menstruation, amenorrhea and menorrhagia due to blood deficiency or blood stasis, it is often prescribed with Shudihuang, Baishao and Chuanxiong, as in the Siwu Decoction. If if it is accompanied by qi deficiency, it is combined with Renshen and Huangqi; if for accompanied by qi stagnation, it is used with Xiangfu and Yanhusuo; and if by blood heat, it is combined with Huangqin and Huanglian. For amenorrhea due to blood stasis, it is used in combination with Taoren and Honghua; for that due to blood-deficiency and cold-stagnation, with Ejiao and Aiye.
3. Abdominal pain due to deficiency-cold; injuries from falls; carbuncles, ulcers and sores; arthralgia due to wind-cold It treat abdominal pain due to blood deficiency, blood stasis or cold stagnation, in combination with Guizhi, Shaoyao and Shengjiang, as in the Danggui Jianzhong Decoction. For injuries from falls marked by pains and ecchymoma, it is prescribed with Ruxiang, Moyao and Taoren, as in the Fuyuan Huoxue Decoction. In the case of early stage of ulcers with redness, swelling and pain, it is combined with Yinhua, Chishao and Tianhuafen, as in the Xianfang Huoming Decoction. In the treatment of unhealed ulcers after rupture, it is combined with Huangqi, Renshen and Rougui, as in the Shiquan Dabu Decoction. It also treats arthralgia due to wind-cold, with Qianghuo, Fangfeng and Huangqi.
4. Constipation due to blood deficiency with intestinal dryness In this case, it is often used in combination with Roucongrong and Niuxi.
[ Usage and Dosage ]: 5-15g.
[ Precautions ]: It is contraindicated in patients with excessive dampness with abdominal fullness and diarrhea.
