This medicinal is the tergum and breastplate of the animal Chinemys reevesii(Gray)(Fam.Testudinidae).The animal can be captured all the year round. After it is killed or scalded to death wtih boiling water, its carapace is taken and cleared of remnant flesh. After which it is dreid by natural sunlight, soaked with vinegar and stir-baked with sand.

[ Medicinal Properties ]: Salty, sweet and slightly cold; relate to liver, kidney ad heart meridians.

[ Medicinal Efficacies ]:  Nourish yin and suppress yang; tonify kidney and strengthen bones; nourish blood and replenish heart.

[ Clinical Applications ]:1. syndrome of liver-kidney yin deficiency    This syndrome manifests as yin deficiency with yang hyperactivity, yin deficiency with internal heat, or yin deficiency with stirring of internal wind. To treat dizziness and vertigo due to yin deficiency with yang hyperactivity, it is combined with Tiandong, Baishao and Muli, as in the Zhengan Xifeng Decoction. To treat bone-steaming and tidal fever, night sweating and spermatorrhea, due to yin deficiency with internal heat, it often prescribed with Shudihuang, Zhimu and Huangbo, as in Dabuyin Pills. In order to treat yin deficiency with stirring internal wind, manifesting as lassitude and clonic convulsions, it often used in combinatinwith Ejiao and Biejia.

2. Kidney deficiency with flaccidity of the tendons and bones    In combination with Shudihuang and Zhimu, as in the Hu Qian Pills, it treats flaccidity of tendon

s and bones, limpness and soreness in the lumbar region and knees and lack of strength to walk. Combined with Ziheche, Lurong and Danggui, it also treats pigeon breast and hunch back, due to insufficiency of spleen and kidney with deficiency of yin-blood, and maldevelopment.

3. Insufficiency of yin-blood with palpitations, insomnia and amnesia      Combined with Shichangpu, Yuanzhi and Longgu, as in Kongsheng Zhenzhong Pills, it treats palpitations, insomnia and amnesia, due to insufficiency of yin-blood.

furthermore, it is cool in nature and functions to stop bleeding, so it is appropriate for metrorrhagia and etrostaxis due to insecurity of thortughfare and concept vessels.

[ Usage and Dosage ]: 9-24g, decoct first. Stir-baked with san and soaked with vinegar, its active ingredicents are easily to be decocted out, its ordorus smell can be removed, and it is easier to be ground into powder and convenient for making preparations.

龟甲为龟科动物乌龟Chinemys reevesii (Gray)的腹甲及背甲。主产地浙江、湖北、湖南等。全年均可捕捉。杀死，或用沸水烫死，剥取甲壳，除去残肉，晒干，以砂炒后醋淬用。
