It is the internal shell of the mollusc Sepiella maindroni de Rochebrune, or Sepia esculenta Hoyle, family Cuttlefish. The osteoid internal shell is taken out and cleaned, and it is dried in the open air. The raw form is utilized for medicine. 

[Medicinal Properties]: Salty, astringent and warm; relate to the spleen, kidney meridians. 

[Medicinal Efficacies]: Astringe to stop bleeding; astringe essence, stop emission and leucorrhea; control acid regurgitation; promote sore healing.

[Clinical Applications]:

1. Metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, haematemesis, hematochezia and bleeding due to trauma In treating metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, it is often used in combination with Qiancao, Zonglutan, such as in the formula Guchong Decoction; for haematemesis and hematochezia, the powder is used together with same amount of the powder of Baiji, such as in the formula Wu Ji Powder; In treating traumatic bleeding, the powder can be applied alone to the local area. 

      2. Nocturnal emission, spermatorrhoea, leucorrhea It can treat for kidney-deficiency, leading to essence not being consolidated, manifesting as nocturnal emission, spermatorrhoea, combined with Shanzhuyu and Tusizi; In treating thin and profuse leucorrhea caused by kidney-deficiency leading to belt vessel lost restriction, it is usually combined with Shanyao and Qianshi; In treating abnormal leucorrhea with bloody discharge, it can be used in combination with Baizhi and Xueyutan, such as in the formula Baizhi Powder. 

       3. Stomach ache with acid regurgitation It is such a good medicinal for stomach ache with acid regurgitation, which can be used together with Yanhusuo, Baiji, Zhe-Beimu and Walengzi.

        4. Skin pyogenic infection, eczema, ulcer without being healed In treating skin pyogenic infection, eczema, it is used together Huangbai, Qingdai, Duan-Shigao, which can be ground into powder and applied to the local area; In treating ulcer with profuse pus, not being healed for a long time, it can be used alone, or used together with Duan-Shigao, Kufan, Bingpian, which are ground into fine powder for applying to the local area.

[Usage and Dosage]: 6-l2g is used for oral use. Dosage can decrease for powder. The appropriate amount is used for external use.
