 It is the dried rhizome of Curcuma linga L., family Zigiberaceae. It is harvested and collected in winter, when the plant has withered away. Then, it is washed clean,boiled or steamed thoroughly and dried in the sunshine. The fibrous roots are removed, and it is cut into pieces to be used in the raw form as a medicine.

[Medicinal Properties ]: Pungent, bitter and warm; relate to spleen and liver meridians.

[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Activate blood and move qi; dredge the meridian passage to arrest pain.

[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Qi stagnation and blood stasis causing pain      To treat qi stagnation and blood-stasis causing epigastric and hyspchondriac pain, it is combined with Baishao, Honghua and Yuanhusuo. For abdominal pain caused by amenorrhea, it is usually combined with Chuanxiong and Yuanhusuo.

2. Wind-damp Bi-syndrome pain    It is especially tuilized to circulate qi in the climbs and to relieve pain of Bi-syndrome together with Qianghuo, Haitongpi and Danggui, such as in the Shujin Decoction.

In addition, Jianghuang can be ground into powder together with Dahuang, Baizhai and Tianhuafen, for external application. It is able to treat early stage of abscess, ulcer sore and furuncle with redness, swelling, feverish sensation and pain, which is of yang syndrome, such as in the Ruyi Jinhuang Powder.

[ Usage and Dosage ]: 3-9g. Appropriate amount for external application.

[ Medicinal Comparison ]: Similarites: Yujin and Jianghuang can  both circulate the blood and move qi, and can be used for qi stagation and blood-stasis.

Differences: Jianghuang is especially efficacious in removing blood-stasis because of its pungent, warm, moving and dispersing nature, for which it is superior to treat blood-stasis due to congealing cold with qi stagnation. It can also be used to treat wind-damp Bi-syndrome pain through dispellig wind and unblocking impediment. YUjin is bitter, cold,descending and purging andhas a powderful action of promoting qi and cooling the blood, for which it is superior to treat blood-stasis due to blood heat. It can also excrete bile and dispel jaundice, clear the heart and expel gloominess, for which it is used for jaundice of damp-heat type and for unconsciousness of heat-type.
