It is the dried thallus of Laminaria japonica Aresch. or Ecklonia kurome Okam.,family Alariaceae. They are dredged up in summer and autumn. After the impurities are removed, they are rinsed clean, cut into slices and dried in the sunshine.

[ Medicinal properties ]: Slaty and cold; relate to liver, stomach and kidney meridian.

 [Medicinal Efficacies ]: Resolve phlegm and soften hardness; induce diuresis and relieve edema.

[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Goiter, scrofula     It has similar function of resolving phlegm and softening hardness with Haizao, so they are usually combined together for mutual reinforcement such as Kunbu Pill. In combination with Haizao and Haigeqiao, it treats goiter qi, fullness in chest and diaphragm. In modern times, it treats thyroid swelling , thyroid adenoma, tuberculosis of lymph nodes and heapatocirrhosis.

昆布为海带科植物海带Laminaria japonica Aresch.或翅藻科植物昆布 Ecklonia kurome Okam.的叶状体。主产于山东、辽宁、浙江等地。夏、秋两季采捞，除去杂质，漂净，切宽丝，晒干。
