It is the dried ripe seed of the Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn., family Nymphaeaceae. It collected in autumn and then dried in the sunshine. The raw form is utilized for medicine.

[Medicinal Properties]: Sweet, astringent and neutral; relate to the spleen, kidney and heart meridians.

[Medicinal Efficacies]: Invigorate the spleen and relieve diarrhea; benefit the kidney to preserve the essence; nourish the heart and tranquilize the mind.

[Clinical Applications]:

1. Diarrhea due to deficiency of the spleen In cases of chronic diarrhea, poor appetite due to deficiency of the spleen, it is usually used together with Dangshen, Fuling, Baizhu, such as in the formula Shen Ling Baizhu Powder. 

      2. Nocturnal emission, spermatorrhea, leucorrhea It can treat for kidney deficiency, leading to essence not being consolidated, manifesting as nocturnal emission, spermatorrhoea, it is usually combined with Qianshi, Longgu, such as in the formula Jinsuo Gujing Pill; for leucorrhea due to spleen deficiency, it is often used with Fuling, Baizhu. For thin leucorrhea, aching and weakness of loins and knees due to deficiency spleen and kidney, it is applied with Shanzhuyu and Shanyao. 

      3. Palpitation, insomnia For mental confusion, palpitation and insomnia due to disharmony between heart and kidney, it is often used with Suanzaoren, Fushen and Yuanzhi.

[Usage and Dosage]: 10-15g is used for oral use. The core must be taken out from the seed and broken into pieces.

Lianxu (Stamen Nelumbinis) is also a medicinal part, which is the stamen of the lotus flower. It is sweet and astringent in flavor, neutral in nature and has the actions of strengthening the kidney to stop seminal emission. It is indicated for seminal emission, spermatorrhea, leucorrhea, and frequent micturition. 1.55g is used for oral use.

Lián Fang

Lianfang is also a medicinal part, which is the ripe receptacle of the lotus flower. It is bitter and astringent in flavor, warm in nature and has the actions of resolving stasis to stop bleeding. It is indicated for metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, bloody urine, bleeding due to hemorrhoids, postpartum lochiorrhea. The carbonized form 5-10g is used for oral use.

Lián Zi Xin is also a medicinal part, which is the premature embryo of the lotus seed. It is bitter in flavor, cold in nature and has the actions of clearing heart, calming the mind, communicating heart and kidney, preserving the essence, stopping bleeding. It is indicated for disharmony between heart and kidney, leading to insomnia, spermatorrhea; hematemesis due to blood heat. 1.5-3g is used for oral use.
