It is the fossil of bones of ancient large mammals, such as horse, rhinoceros, deer, oxen, elephant types or that of front teeth of elephant type. It can ve collected all year round and stored in dry places after earth and other impurities are removed. The raw or calcined ones are used as medicine.

[ Medicinal Properties  ]: Sweet, astringent and neutral; relate to heart, liver and kidney meridians.

[ Medicinal efficacies ]: Induce sedation and calm mind; pacify liver and subdue hyperactive yang; astringe and arrest discharge.

[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Restlessness, palpitation, insomnia, fright epilepsy ad mania      It is used together with Zhusha, Yuanzhi and Suanzaoren; also with Muli in Jiuni Decoction.

2. Yin deficiency and yang hyperactivity manifested as irritability and dizziness     To treat yin deficiency leading to hyperactivity of yang resulting in irritability and dizziness, it is combined with Muli, Baishao anad Daizheshi in Zhengan Xifeng Decoction.

3. Loss and consumption syndromes        For kidney deficiency causing emission, it is used with Muli, Shayuangzi and Qianshi; for reddish leukorrhea and menorrhagia, with Muli, Haipiaoxiao and Shanyao; for sweating due to deficiency, usually with Muli, Fuxiaomai and Wuweizi.

In addition, Duanlonggu (calcined Longgu) can be ground into powder for external application  with the functions of absorbing moisture and healing ulcers, so it is used for exudative prurigo and unhealed carbuncles after evacuation of pus.

[ Usage and Dosage ]: 15-30g, decoct first. It is used externally with appropriate dosage. The calcined are used for astringing and the raw in other cases.

[ Annotation ]: Long chi      It has the same source with Longgu; the fossil of bones and teeth of ancient large mammals. It is  collected after removing earth and knocking away gums when Longgu is collected. The raw or calcined are ground into powder to treat diseases. It is sweet, astringent, cold, and attributive to the heart and liver meridian. Compared with Longgu, it is more effective to induce sedation and calm spirit and so mainly treats fright epilepsy, mania, palpitation, insomnia and frequent dreams. It has the same usage and dosage with Longgu.

龙骨为古代大型哺乳类动物象类、三趾马类、犀类、鹿类、牛类等骨骼的化石。主产于山西、内蒙古、河南、河北、陕西、甘肃等地。全年可采，挖出后，除去泥土及杂质，贮于干燥处，生用或煅用。
