This medicial is the dried root tuber of Ophiopogon japonicus(Thunb.) KerGawl.(Fam. Liliaceae). It is excavated in the summer , dried by natural sunshine and piled repeatedly until it becomes 70%-80% dried. After removal of its rootlets , it is then crushed for utilization.

[ Medicinal Properties ]: Bitter, cold; relate to lung and kidney meridians.

[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Nourish yin and promote fluid production; moisten lung and clear heart.

[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Stomach yin deficiency syndrome    In combination with Shengdihuang and Yuzhu, it itreats deficiency of stomach yin due to heat, manifesting as dry mouth and tongue. For xiaoke (Similar to diabetes), it is combined with Tianhuafen and Wumei. It is combined with Banxia and Renshen to treat vomiting due to deficiency of stomach yin. To treat constipation due to pathogenic heat damaging fluid, it is prescribed with Shengdihuang and Xuanshen, as in the Zengye Decoction.

2. Lung yin deficiency syndrome   Prescribed with Ejiao, Shigao and Sangye, in Qingzao Jiufei Decoction, it treats yin deficiency with dryness-heat in the lung, manifesting as dry nose and throat, dry cough with little phlegm, sore throat and hoarse voice.

3. Heart yin deficiency syndrome   To treat deficiency of heart yin, manifested as dysphoria, insomnia, dream-disturbed sleep, amnesia, palpitations and fearful throbbing, it is prescribed with Shengdihuang and Suanzaoren, as in the Tianwang Buxin Pills. To treat dysphoria and hyposomnia, due to heat invading heart-nutrient level, it is used in combination with Huanglian and Shengdihuang.

[ Usage and Dosage ]: 6-12g.

麦冬为百合科植物麦冬Ophiopogon japonicus(Thunb.)Ker-Gawl.的块根。主产于四川、浙江、江苏等地。夏季采挖，反复暴晒、堆置，至七八成干，除去须根，干燥，打破生用。
