Muzei is the dried above ground part of Equisetum hiemale L., pertaining to Equisetaceae. It is collected in summer and fall. After the ipurities are removed, it is sun dried or dried in the shade. The raw form is used.

[ Medicinal Properties ]: Sweet, bitter and neutral ; relate lung and liver meridians.

[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Disperse wind-heat; improve vison and remove nehula.

[ Usage and Dosage ]: 3-9g.

[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Wind-heat attacking, reddish eyes and nebula        Muzei treats wind-heat attacking, manifesting as reddish and swpollen eyes with pain and nebula, in combination with Chantui and Juhua. Also it treats reddish eyes due to liver heat, in combination with Xiakucao and Juhua.

2. Bleeding    In combination with other hemostatic, it is indicated for bleeding. For Hematochezia due to intestinal wind, it is in combination with Huajiao and Jingjie; for example in Muzei Powder.

木贼为木贼科植物木贼Equisetum hiemale L.的干燥地上部分。主产于黑龙江、吉林、辽宁、河北、内蒙古、新疆、青海、陕西、甘肃、安徽、湖北、四川、贵州、山西等省区。夏、秋二季采割，除去杂质，晒干或阴干。切段，生用。
