It is the dried bark of cinnamomum cassia Presl, family Lauraceae. It is mostly peeled off ad collected in autumn. Impurity and rough bark are removed off and ried in the shade. It is cut into pieces or ground into powder ad the raw form is used.

[ Medicinal Properties ]: Pungent, sweet in flavor, extremely hot in nature; relate to the kidney, spleen, heart and liver meridians.

[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Reinforce fire ad strengthen Yang; return fire to its origin; disperse cold to alleviate pain; warm meridians and unblock collaterals.

[ Clinical applications ]: 1. Syndrome of kidney yang deficiency     It is good at warmly tonifying Mingmen and is the essential medicinal herb to treat kidney yang deficiency syndrome, manifesting as impotence, frequent micturition, soreness and coldness of loins and knees, it is usually used in combination with Fuzi, Shangzhuyu, Shudihuang, such as in the formula Gui Fu Bawei Pill; In treating for diarrhea, abdominal pain due to yang deficiency of spleen and kidney, it is used together with Fuzi, Ganjiang, Baizhu , such as in the formula Gui Fu Lizhong Pill.

2.Deficiency and coldness of Lower Energizer and up-floating of deficiency yang      For syndrome of deficiency and coldness of kidney yang and up-floating of deficiency yang , manifesting as upper heat and lower cold, it is often used in combination with Shanzhuyu, Wuweizi, Renshen, Muli, so as to return fire to its source.

3. All pain syndromes due to accumulation of cold and stasis of the blood     In treating for cold pain in epigastric abdomen, it can be used alone for oral use or local applications in umbilicus or together with Ganjiang, Digxiang, Wuzhuyu; for Bi-Syndrome with cold-dampness, lumbago, It is usually used with Sangjisheng, Duhuo, Duzhong, such as in the formula Duhuo Jisheng Decoction; or angina pectoris of chest impediment, it is often used together with Fuzi, Guizhi, Xiebai; for amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea due to cold stagnation, it is often used together with Danggui, Chuanxiong, Aiye, such as in the formula Shaofu Zhuyu Decoction; for colic of coldness with abdominal pain, it is usually used in combination with Wuzhuyu, Xiaohuixiang.

4. Yin-abscess, carbuncle and sore that without being healed before suppuration or after rupture for a long time      In treating for swollen yin-abscess due to deficient-cold of qi and blood, it is usually used in combination with Lujiaojiao, Shudihuang, Baijiezi, such as in the formula Yanghe Decoction; in treating for carbuncle and sore without being healed before suppuration or after rupture for a long tie, it can be sued together with Huangqi, Danggui, such as in the formula Tuoli Huangqi Decoction.

In addition, it can  warm up yang qi, invigorate the development of qi and blood, therefore, it is often used with medicinals that tonifying qi and blood, indicated for the syndrome of deficiency of qi and blood after prolonged chronic disease.

[ Usage and Dosage ]:  1-4.5g. The medicinal is suitable to be decocted later; after being ground into powder, it  is taken after mixing with water, or in pills and powders, 1-2g every time.

[ Precautions ]:  It must be used with caution when treating patients who have a bleeding tendency and pregnant women. It is not suitable to be used in combination with Chishizhi.

[ Medicinal Comparison ]: Similarities:  Fuzi and Rougui are all extremely hot in nature and have the same function of reinforcing fire and strengtheing Yang,dispersing cold to alleviate pain, they are usually indicated for interior cold syndrome and Bi-syndrome.

Differences:  But Fuzi is good at restoring Yin from collapse and warmly tonifying spleen andkidney. Rougui is good at warmly tonifying Mingmen, returning fire to its origin, invigorating the development of qi and blood, therefore, it is often used in treating for syndrome 0of deficiency and coldness of kidney yang and up-floating of deficiency yang, and deficiency of qi and blood after prolonged chronic disease.
