It is the ripe fruit of the Cornus officinalis Sieb.et Zucc., family Cornaceae. The medicinal material is collected in the end of autumn or early winter, it is baked over a soft fire or treated with boiling water for a moment, the core is removed promptly, and then it is dried in the sunshine or baked for medicinal use.

[Medicinal Properties]: Sour, astringent and slightly warm; relate to the liver and kidney meridians.

[Medicinal Efficacies]: Tonify liver and kidney; astringe essence and strengthen collapse.

[Clinical Applications]:

1. Soreness of waist and knees, dizziness, tinnitus, and impotence      It can be used for deficiency of the liver and kidney manifesting as dizziness, soreness of waist, tinnitus, combined with Shudihuang, Shanyao, such as in the formula Luewei Dihuang Pill; It can be used for weak fire of mingmen manifesting as cold pain of waist and knees, dysury, combined with Rougui, Fuzi, such as in the formula Shenqi Pill; for impotence due to insufficiency of kidney-yang, combined with Lurong, Buguzhi, Bajitian. 

       2. Emission, spermatorrhoea, ensuresis, frequent urination   In treating emission,spermatorrhoea due to kidney deficiency leading to essence not being consolidated, it is often used together with Shudihuang, Shanyao, ; In treating enuresis and frequent urination with deficiency of kidney leading to bladder lost restriction, it is often used together with Fupenzi, Junyingzi,Shayuanzi.

       3. Metrorrhagia and metrostaxix and menorrhagia   In treating metrorhagia and metrostaxis and menorrhagia due to deficiency of liver and kidney, it is often used with Shudihuang, Baishao; in treating those due to deficiency of spleen, unconsolidation of thoroughfare and conception vessels, it is often used with Longgu, Huangqi.

       4.Profuse sweating and collapse due to weak constitution   For profuse sweating and collapse due to weak constitution, it is often used with Renshen, Fuzi, and Longgu.

In addition, this medicinal also can be used for Xiaoke (diabetes), it is mostly combined with Shengdihuang and Tianhuafen.

[Usage and Dosage]: 3-10g is used for oral use. Large dosage may be up top 20-30g for emergency to strengthen collapse.

[Precautions]: It is not suitable for patients with dribbling and astringent pain during urination due to damp-heat in normal timer.

山茱萸为山茱萸科植物山茱萸Cornus officinalis Sieb.et Zucc.的成熟果肉。主产于浙江、安徽、河南、陕西、山西等地。秋末冬初采收。用文火烘焙或置沸水中略烫，及时挤出果核。晒干或烘干用。
