 This medicinal is the fresh, or dried, stem of Dendrobium nobile Lindl.,D candidum wall. ex Lindl. or D. fimbriatum Hook. var. oculatum Hook (Fam. Orchidaceae). It is excavated all year round. The best quality ones are excavated in the autumn. It is dried by baking or natural sunlight, sliced and utilized in its unprocessed form. Fresh Dendrobium is cultivated in sandy soil so that it can be obtained easily.

[ Medicinal Properties ]: Sweet, slightly cold; relate to stomach and kidney meridians.

[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Strengthen stomach and promote fluid production; nourish yin and clear heat.

[ Clinical Applications ]: 1.Stomach yin deficiency sydrome and febrile diseases with consumption of yin    It  treats gastric pain, gingivitis due to stomach heat with yin deficiency, in combination with Shengdihuang and Huangqin. It also treats dysphoria and thirst due to consumption of fluid after febrile disease, in combination with Tianhuafen and fresh Shendihuang.

2. Kidney yin deficiency syndrome    For blurry vision, it is used in combination with Gouqizi, SHudihuang, as in SHihu Yeguang Pills. In cases of flaccidity of the bones and tendons, it is used with Shudinghuang and Shanzhuyu. In addition, for bone-steaming fever, due to kidney-deficiency with effulgent fire, it is combined with Shengdihuang and Gouqizi.

[ Usage and Dosage ]: 6-12g. 15-30g of the fresh form.

石斛为兰科植物环草石斛Dendrobium loddigesii Rolfe.、马鞭石斛D.fimbriatum hook.var.oculatum Hook.、黄草石斛D. Chrysanthum wall.、铁皮石斛D.candidum wall.ex Lindl.或金钗石斛D.nobile Lindl.的茎。主产于四川、贵州、云南等地。全年均可采取，以秋季采收为佳。烘干或晒干，切段，生用。鲜者可栽于砂石内，以备随时取用。
