The source is form the dried female insects of Eupolyphaga sinensis Walker. Or Steleophaga plancyi (Boleny), family Eupolyphaga. It is captured in the summer and scalded to death in boiling water, after which it is dried in the sunshine, or roasted dry to be utilized as a medicine.

[ Medicinal Properties]: Slaty, cold and mmildly toxic; relate to liver meridian.

[ Meidicinal Efficacies ]: Dissipate and remove blood-stasis;reconnect the tendon and relocate the bone.

[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Blood stasis causing amenorrhea, postpartum abdominal pain and abdominal mass      For postpartum abdominal pain due to blood stasis, it is usually combined with Dahuang and Taoren , as in the Xiayuxue Decoction.

2.Fracture, blood stasis causing pain and contusion of the waist      To treat fracture, it can be combined with Gusuibu, Ruxiang and Moyao. In cases of contusion of the waist, it can be utilized alone, after being baked dry and ground into powder, to be consumed orally.

[ Usage and Dosage ]: 3-9g. In powder form, 1-1.5g, per administration.

[ Precautions ]: It is contraindicated to use with pregnant women.

土鳖虫为鳖蠊科昆虫地鳖Eupolyphaga sinensis Walk.或冀地鳖Steleophaga plancyi(Boleny)雌虫的全体。全国均有，主产于两湖、江苏、河南，江苏的产品最佳。野生者，夏季捕捉；饲养者全年可捕捉。用沸水烫死，晒干或烘干。虫

【应用】        1．跌打损伤，筋伤骨折，瘀肿疼痛。本品咸寒入血，主入肝经，性善走窜，能活血消肿止痛，续筋接骨疗伤，为伤科常用药，尤多用于骨折筋伤，瘀血肿痛。可单用研末调敷，或研末黄酒冲服；临床常与自然铜、骨碎补、乳香等同用，如接骨紫金丹（《杂病源流犀烛》）;骨折筋伤后期，筋骨软弱，常配续断、杜仲等药用，如壮筋续骨丸（《伤科大成》）。        2．血瘀经闭，产后瘀滞腹痛，积聚痞块。本品入肝经血分，能破血逐瘀而消积通经，常用于经产瘀滞之证及积聚痞块。治血瘀经闭，产后瘀滞腹痛，常与大黄、桃仁等同用，如下瘀血汤；治干血成劳，经闭腹满，肌肤甲错者，则配伍大黄、水蛭等，如大黄虫丸（《金匮要略》）；治积聚痞块，常配伍柴胡、桃仁、鳖甲等以化瘀消癥，如鳖甲煎丸（《金匮要略》）。
