It is the dried bulb of Allium macrostemon Bge. or Allium chinensis G. Don., family Liliaceae. The bulbs are dug and collected in summer and autumn. [ Medicinal Properties ]: Pungent, bitter and warm; relate to lung, stomach and large intestine meridians.
[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Activate yang and dissipate accumulation; promote qi flow to remove stagnation.
[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. chest impediment with pain For that caused by cold-phlegm and damp turbidity accumulated in chest and failure of yang qi to disperse, it is used with Banxia and Gualou in Gualou Xiebai Decoction; for that due to obstruction of congealing cold, usually with Danshen, Chuanxiong, Chishao.
2. Dysentery with tensmus For qi stagnation in intestine and stomach manifested as dysentery with tenesmus, abdominal distensioin and diarrhea, it is combined with Muxiang and Zhishi; for dysentery with tenesmus due to damp-heat accumulation, with Huangbo and Qinpi.
[ Usage and Dosage ]: 5-9g.
[ Precautions ]: It is not advisable for patients with dysfunction of stomach and poor appetite and also for those who cannot bear the odor of garlic.
