Zhenzhu is the pearl from Pteria martensii (Dunker), Hyriopsis cumingii ( Lea), Cristaria plicata ( Leach), or other bivalves, pertaining to Pteriidae, usaully caused by stumuli. The former is generated from sea, of which the superior is from Hepu area, Gangdong Province. The latter two kinds are generated from fresh water. It is collected it all the year around. After taken from the body, it is washed, dried and then refined with water or ground into fine powder.

[ Medicinal Properties ]: Sweet, salty and cold; relate to heart and livermeridians.

[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Tranquilize; improve vision, clear nebula; remove toxin and promote tissue regeneration.

[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Uneasiness, palpitation and insomnia       Zhenzhu is sweet and cold, and is good at treating irritation, insomnia, dream-disturbed sleep, amnesia and uneasiness, due to heart-insufficiency with heat, in combination with Suanzaoren and Baiziren. Also it treats uneasiness, palpitation and insomnia, by itself or mixed with bee honey for oral administration.

2. Infantile convulsions and epilepsy       It treats acute infantile convulsions due to phlegm heat, which manifests as high fever, coma, convulsions and spasma, in combinnation with Niuhuang and Dannanxiang. It treats infantile fright epilepsy, manifesting as uneasiness, convulsions, protrusion and moving of tongue, spasms, in combinatin with Zhusha and Niuhuang.

3. Reddish eyes, nebula and blurred vision      For reddish eyes with astringent pain and nebula due to wind-heat in liver meridian, or up-stiring of liver fire, it is in combination with Qingxianzi and Juhua.

4. Aphtha, sores, ulcer, swelling and lasting ulcer        In case of aphtha, swollen gum with pain and ulcer in the throat, it is in combination with Pengsha and Qingdai. For ulceration of sores and lasting for long time, it is in combination with Luganshi and Huanglian for external application.

 Also it treats pigmentation of skin. Nowadays it is used in comedy to cure pigmentatin of skin by the efficacy to moisten skin and nourish face.

[ Usage and Dosage ]: For oral administration, it is used in powder and pill, with dosage of 0.1-0.3g. Also it is used externally.

珍珠为珍珠贝科动物马氏珍珠贝Pteria martensii (Dunker)、蚌科动物三角帆蚌Hyriopsis cumingii (Lea) 或褶纹冠蚌Cristaria plicata (Leach) 等双壳类动物受刺激形成的珍珠。前一种海产珍珠，主产于广东、海南、广西等沿海地区，以广东合蒲产者最佳；后两种淡水珍珠主产于安徽、江苏、黑龙江等地。全年可采，自动物体内取出，洗净，干燥。水飞或研成极细粉用。
