This medicinal, also called Yubaifu, is the dried tuber of Typhonium giaanteum Engl, family Araceae. The tubers are dug and collected in autumn and winter. After the fibrous roots and the skin are removed, they are fumigated with sulphur once or twice and then dried in the sunshine. They can also be sliced after they are processed with alum and fresh ginger.

[ Medicinal Properties ]: Pungent, warm and toxic; relate to stomach and liver meridians.

[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Dry dampness and resolve phlegm; dispel wind and control convulsions; remove toxin and dissipate nodulation.

[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Accumulation of wind-phlegm, wry mouth and eyes, tetanus and migraine      For accumulation of wind-phlegm, convulsion or wry mouth and eyes, it is combined with Banxia, Tianma  and Quanxie. It is effective for tetanus in combination with Tiannanxing, Tianma and Fangfeng in Yuzhen Powder. It treats migraine together with Baizhi and Chuanxiong.

2. Bite by Poisonous snake, scrofula and subcutaneous nodule       For bite by poisonous snake, it is applied on the wounded parts alone or in combination with other medicinals for removing snake toxin through external application or oral administration. The fresh medicinal can be pounded for external application to treat scrofula and subcutanneous nodule.

[ Usage and Dosage ]: 3-6g. It is usually used after it is processed. The appropriate amount of medicinal can be pounded thoroughly, cooked into paste or ground into powder to mix with liquor for external application.

[ Precautions ]: It is used with caution for pregnant women. The raw medicinal must be used carefully in case of oral administration.

[ Annotation ]:It is the tuber of Aconitum coreanum(Levl)Raip, family Buttercup. Its earliest record can be found in Ming Yi Bie Lu, and Baifuzi used as medicinal herb later on refers to Guanbaifu. With violent toxicity, it must be boiled together with bean curd for using. Both Guanaifu and Yubaifu can resolve wind-phlegm and control convulsions, but Yubaifu has mild toxicity and can remove toxin and dissipate nodulation, so it is widely used as the genuine one of Baifuzi, which is usually used to disperse cold-dampness and relieve pain and now seldom used.

禹白附为天南星科植物独角莲Typhonium giganteum Engl.的块茎。主产于河南、甘肃、湖北等地。秋季采挖，除去残茎、须根外皮；用硫黄熏1～2次，晒干。或用白矾、生姜制后切片。
