 It is the dry tuber of Bletilla striata ( Thunb) Reichb.f., family Orchidaceae. Collected in summer and autumn, fibrous root removed, washed clean and dried in the sun, it can be utilized in its raw form.

[ Medicinal Properties ]: Bitter, sweet , astringent and slightly cold; relate to lung, stomach and liver meridians.

[ Medicinal Efficacies]: Stop bleeding by astringing; remove swelling and promote regeneration.

[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Bleeding      It is the primary astringent hemostatic and is used for various internal and external bleedings, especially for bleeding in the lung and stomach. It can be used powdered alone and mixed with rice soup for oral use, or in combination with other medicinal, e.g., for insufficiency of lung-yin with dry cough and hemoptysis, combined with Pibaye, Oujie, Ejiao; for bleeding of stomach , combined with Haipiaoxiao; while for bleeding due to trauma, it can be ground into powder or combined with Duanshigao for external application.

2. Sores and carbuncle and rhagadia of hands and feet      It is suitable for both oral and external uses. Forthe early stage of carbuncle, its powder could  be used alone for external aplication, or combined with Jinyinhua, Tianhuafen to clear off carbuncle; for ulcerated and unhealed carbuncle, it is usually ground into powder together with Huanglian, Qinfen and Wubeizi for external application; for rhagadia of hand and feet, the powder can be mixed with sesame oil and then applied to the local area.

[ Usage and Dosage ]: 6-15g. 3-6g of the powder is used per time. Appropriate amount for external application.

[ Precautions ]: It is incompatible with Wutou and medicinals of the same kind.

白及为兰科植物白及Bletilla striata (Thunb.) Reichb. f.的块茎。主产于贵州、四川、湖南、湖北、安徽、河南、浙江、陕西等地。夏、秋二季采挖，除去须根，洗净，晒干，生用。
