Zheshi is the hematite, pertaining to corundum ofoxides ore. As it is mainly from Shanxi Province (known as Dai Shire in ancient time), often it called "Daizheshi". After removing other stones, it is pounded. The raw form is used or after tempered in vinegar and groud into powder.

[ Medicinal Properties ]: Bitter and cold; relate to liver and heart meridians.

[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Pacify liver, subdue yang, check adverse rise of qi with heavy settling; cool blood and stop bleeding.

[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Dizziness, dizzy vision and headache       It treats dizziness, vertigo, distending eyes and tinnitus, due to hyperactivity of liver yang, usually combined with Niuxi and Shenglonggu, such as in Zhengan Xifeng Decoction. In case of dizziness, headache, irritation and insomnia due to up-flaming of liver fire, it is combined with Zhenzhumu and Cishi.

2. Vomiting, hiccup and belching        Usually it is combined with Xuanfuhua and Banxia; for example in Xuanfu Daizhe Decoction. For dysphagia with Fuiling to intake food, and dry stool, usually it is combined with Dangshen and Danggui.

3. Reversed flow of qi and dyspnea      For dyspnea of deficiency type due to deficiency of lung-kidney or deficiency of both yin and yang, usually combined with Dangshen and Shangzhuyu; for example in Shenzhe Zhengqi Decoction. It treats cough and dysnpea due to lung heat, combined with Sangbaipi and Zisuzi.

4. Hematemesis, epistaxis, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis       It treats hematemesis, epistaxis, uneasiness and heat in chest due to adverse rising of stomach qi, in combination with Baishao and Zhuru, such as in Hanjiang Decoction. For metrorrhagia and metrostaxis due to blood heat, it is usually combined with Yuyuliang and Chishizhi; for example in Zhenling Pills.

[ Usage and Dosage ]: 10-30g. It is pounded and then decocted first when it is used in decoction. When it is used in pills and powders, the dosage is 1-3g. Also it is used externally. For checking adverse rise of qi and pacifyig liver, the raw form is used, while for stop bleeding it is used after calcined.

[ Precautions ]: Be cautious for pregnant woman. It contains minute amount of Arsenicum, so cannot be used for long time.
