 It is the flower or flower bud of Sophora japonica L., family Leguminosae. Collected before or when it bloosoms during summer, the twig, peducle and other impurities of the anthotaxy removed, dried, it could be used raw, sitr-baked or carbonized.

[ Medicinal Properties ]: Bitter, slightly cold; relate to liver and large intestine meridians.

[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Cool the blood and stop bleeding; clear away liver-heat and lower the fire.

[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Blood-heat causing bleeding        As its efficacy is to cool the blood and stop bleeding, it is used for bleeding due to blood heat . Since it is efficient to stop bleeding through clearing away and discharging pathogenic-heat influences in large intestine, it is better to e utilized for bleeding in the lower part of the body, such as, for hemorrhoids and hematochezia and should be combined with heat-clearing and blood-cooling medicinals ,such as Zhizi and Diyu.

2. Conjunctivitis and headache         For these symptoms, it can be decocted alone, to be taken as tea or combined with Xiakucao and Juhua.

[ Usage and Dosage ]: 5-9g.

[ Annotation ]: Similarities: Huaijiao is the mature fruit of Sohaora japonica L.,the favor, nature, actions and clinical applications of whcih are the same as those of Huaihua.

Difference: Huaijiao's action of stopping bleeding is weaker than that of Huaihua, while its action of clearing away heat is stronger. Huaijiao can also moisten the intestines. Clinically, it is often applied to hemorrhoids and hematochezia, especially to bleeding hemorrhoids. 6-12g is used in decoction and it is taken orally.

槐花为豆科植物槐Sophora japonica L.的干燥花蕾及花。全国各地区产，以黄土高原和华北平原为多。夏季花未开放时采收其花蕾，称为“槐米”；花开放时采收，称为“槐花”。采收后除去花序的枝、梗及杂质，及时干燥，生用、炒用或炒炭用。
