It is the dried ripe seed of Sterculia lychnophora Hance, family Sterculiaceae. The seeds are collected between April to June, when the fruits are ripe. Then they are split open and dired in the sunshine.

 [ Medicinal Properties ]: Sweet and cool; relate to lung and large intestine meridians.

[ Meidicinal Efficacies ]: Clear lung and resolve phlegm; relieve sore throat and restore voice; moisten intestines and release bowls.

[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Lung-heat causing hoarsenss, sore throat and cough        To treat lung-heat manifested as hoarseness, sore throat and cough, it is usually soaked alone in boiling water for drinking, or combined with Jiegeng and Gancao.

2. Intestinal dryness with constipation         It is soaked alone for drinking or combined with heat-clearing and purgative medicinals.

[ Usage and Dosage ]: 2-4g are soaked in boiling water for drinking or decocted for oral administration.

胖大海为梧桐科植物胖大海stereulia lychnophora Hance的成熟种子。主产于泰国、柬埔寨、马来西亚、印度尼西亚、越南、印度等国。4～6月果实成熟开裂时，采收种子，晒干。
