It is the dried rhizome ofZingiber officinale (Willed ) Rosc., family Zingiberaceae. The medicinal is mainly produced in Sichuan and Guizhou provinces. The dried ginger can be utilized after it is burnt with sand until it knobs. The surface should turn brown, or it is stir-baked until the surface is black and the interior is dark-brown.

[ Medicinal Properties ]: Bitter, astringent, warm; relate to spleen and liver meridians.

[ Medicinal Efficacies ] : Warm channels to stop bleeding; warm the middle energizer to alleviate pain.

[ Clinical applications ] : 1. Dificiency and cold causing bleeding      Paojiang can control the blood through warming spleen-yang, and can also stop bleeding directly. It is especially used for haematemesis,hematochezia caused by spleen-yang deficiency and failure of spleen to control blood. It an be taken orally in powdered form by itself, mixed with rice soup. When it is used for haematemesis, hematochezia due to asthenia-cold of the lower energizer, it is combined with Renshen, Fuzi or Huangqi. Furthermore for metrorrhagia and metrostaxis caused by asthenia-cold of the chong (thoroughfare) and ren(conception)meridians, it is usually used in combination with Wumei and Zonglutan.

2. Abdominal pain and diarrhea    When used for abdomial pain due to cold of the middle energizer, it is usually combined with Gaoliangjiang. In cases of postpartum pain in the lower abdomen, it is combined with Danggui , Chuangxiong,and taoren, such as in the Shenghua Decoction. If patients have diarrhea due to deficiency and cold of the middle energizer, it is combined with medicinals that warm the middle and stop diarrhea.

[ Usage and Dosage ] :3-9g.

炮姜为姜科植物姜Zingiber officinale Rosc.干燥根茎的炮制品，又名黑姜。主产于四川、贵州等地。以干姜砂烫至鼓起，表面呈棕褐色，或炒炭至外表色黑，内至棕褐色入药。
