Shengjiang is the fresh rhizome of Zingiber officinale Rosc.,pertaining to Zingiberaceae. It is collected in fall and winter. After the fibrous root, earth and sands are removed, it is cut into thin slices. The raw form is used.
[ Medicinal Properties ]: Pungent and warm; relate to lung, spleen and stomach meridians.
[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Dispel cold, release superficies; warm the middle, arrest vomiting; resolve phelgm and stop cough.
[ Usage and Dosage ]: 3-9 g. Also it can be pounded into juice for oral administration.
[ Precautions ]: It is pungent and warm. As a result, avoid with exuberant heat, or yin deficiency with internal heat.
[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Exterior contraction of wind-cold By itself or in combination with brown sugar and Congbai(fistular onion stalk), Shengjiang treats mild cold due to wind-cold.
2. Stomach cold and vomiting It is known as the saint medicine for vomiting, for it is good at treating vomiting due to stomach cold. In combination with other medicine, it can treat various vomiting. For vomiting due to stomach cold, it is in combination with Banxia, such as in Xiaobanxia Decoction. For that due to stomach heat, it is in combination with Huanglian and Zhuru.
3. Lung cold and cough It is good at treating wind-cold invasion of lung, manifesting as profuse phlegm, cough, aversion to cold and headache, in combination with Mahuang and Xinren.
Also it can remove toxin of raw Banxia, raw Nanxing, fish and crab.
[ Annotation ]: Sheng jiang pi It is the peel of Shengjiang. Its property is pungent and cold. It can harmonize spleen and promote water, to treat edema and dysuria. Dosage 3-10 g.
Sheng jiang zhi The juice made by pounding from shengjiang is known as Shengjiangzhi. It is similar to Shengjiang in efficacies, but good at resolving phelgm and arresting vomiting. It can treat numbness, swelling and pain of tongue due to intoxication by Tiannancing and Banxia, or severe vomiting and failing to eat, as well as aute syncope due to wind stroke. Dosage 3-10 drops.
