It isthe resin from the bark of Boswellia carterii Birdw and other species in the same genus, family Burseraceae. The resin is collected and coagulated int to a solid, during spring and autumn. It is often utilized in its stir-baked form.

[ Medicinal Properties ]: Pungent, bitter and warm; relate to liver, heart and spleen meridians.

[ Mediicnal Efficacies ]: Activate blood and alleviate pain; subside swelling and promote tissue regeneration.

[ Clinical APplications ]: 1. Blood stasis causing pain      For dysmenorrheal, it can be combined with Danggui, Chuangxiong and Xiangfu. In cases of epigasteric pain, it is combined with Chuanlianzi and Yanhusuo. To treat Bi-syndrome of wind-cold-damp type, it is usually cobined with Qianghuo, Qinjiao and Danggui, such as in the Juanbi Decoction.

2. Trauma and sores and ulcers, abscess and swelling       To treat trauma with pain due to blood stasis, it can be used together with Moyao, Xuejie and Huanghua, as in the qili Powder. In order to treat large carbuncle with hardness and pain, it is usually combined with Moyao, xionghuang and Shexiang, such as in the Xingxiao pill. In addition, forindolence sores and ulcers, after rupture, it can be ground into powder together with Moyao, for external application, as in the Haifu Powder.

[ Usage and Dosage ]:3-10g. It is better when the oil is stir-baked out of the medicinal. The raw or the stir-baked form can be used for external application, gruond into powder and used in the appropriate amount.

[ Precautions ]: It is trubid and bitter and easily causes nausea and vomiting. Large dosage should be avoided and it should be used with caution for patients with a weak stomach. It is contraindicated to use with pregnant women and patients without stasis.

乳香为橄榄科植物乳香树Boswellia carterii Birdw及其同属植物皮部渗出的树脂。主产于非洲索马里、埃塞俄比亚等地。野生或栽培。春夏季采收。将树干的皮部由下向上顺序切伤，使树脂渗出，数天后凝成固体，即可采收。可打碎生用，内服多炒用。
