The source is from the dried ripe fruit of Amomum villosum Lour., Amomum villosum Lour. var. xanthioides T. L. Wu et Senjen or Amomum longiligulare T.L. Wu, family Zingiberaceae. The medicinal from Amomum villosum Lour. has the best quality. It is collected in summer and autumn when the fruits are ripe, dried in the sun or in low temperature. The crude one is broken into pieces for medication.

[ Medicinal Properties ]: Pungent and warm; relate to spleen and stomach meridians.

[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Resolvedampness, move qi; warm the middle, check diarrhea; prevent abortion.

[ Usage and Dosage ]: 3-6g. It should be added later to the decoction.

[ Precautions ]: Be careful when using with yin deficiency with blood dryness.

[ Annotation ]: Sharenqiao: The source is from the shell of Fructus Amomi. Its properties and actions resemble Sharen. But it is weaker in nature and efficacy than Sharen. It is suitable for qi stagnation in the spleen and stomach manifested as epigastric and abdominal distending sensation and pain, vomiting, nausea and poor appetite, etc. The dosage is equal to that of Sharen.

 

[ Clinical applications ]: 1. Retention of dampness in the middle energizer and qi stagnation in the spleen and stomach     It has good actions of resolving damp, enlivening spleen, moving qi and warming the middle. So it is suitable especially for qi stagnatin due to cold-damp. For retention of dampness in the middle energizer, it is usually combined with Houpo, Chenpi and Zhishi. For qi stagnation in the spleen and stomach, it is combined with Muxiang and Zhishi, etc.,such as in Xiangsha Zhizhu Pill. For spleen-stomach weakness, it can be used together with medicinals that can invigorate spleen and replenish qi such as Dangshen, Baizhu and Fuling,etc., such as in Xiangsha Liujunzi Decoction.

 

2. Vomiting and diarrhea due to spleen-stomach deficiency-cold    It can warm the middle, arrest vomiting and check diarrhea. For diarrhea of cold in the spleen , it can be ground into powder alone for oral use, or together with Ganjiang and Fuzi, etc.

 

3. Morning sickness and threatened abortion of qi stagnation     It can move qi and harmonize the middle to arrest vomiting and prevent abortion. It can be used alone, such as in Suosha Powder, or together with Sugeng and Baizhu, etc.

砂仁为姜科植物阳春砂A.villosum Lour.、绿壳砂A. villosum Lour. Var. xanthioides T.L.Wu et Senjen或海南砂 A. longiligulare T.L.Wu的干燥成熟果实。阳春砂主产于广东、广西、云南、福建等地；绿壳砂主产于广东、云南等地；海南砂主产于海南及雷州半岛等地。于夏、秋间果实成熟时采收，晒干或低温干燥。用时打碎生用。
