 It is the plant of Cephalanoplos segetyum ( Bunge) kitam.,family Compositae. After the medicinal is collected during its flowering period in summer, it is washed clean, dried in the sun and then cut into segments. It is utilized both in its raw and carbonized forms.

[ Medicinal Properties ]: Bitter and cool; relate to heart and liver meridians.

[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Cool blood and stop bleeding; eliminate toxic material to treat carbuncle.

[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. BLood-heayt causing bleeding     It is useful for treating bleeding conditions which are due to blood heat and manifested as haematemesis, hemoptysis,epistaxis, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis. Often it is combined with Daji, for mutual reinforcement. Due to its actio of also promoting diuresis it is often used to treat hematuria and blood stranguria, individually or in combination with Shengdihuang, Zhizi and Danzhuye, such as in the Xiaoji Yinzi Decoction. In modern times, it is alo applied to bleeding which is due to poor postpartum uterine shrinkage.

2. Toxic-heat causing sores and carbuncles     It is useful for sores and carbuncles, which are due to toxic-heat. It can be used by itself, in raw fresh form ( the fresher form is superior), or it can be combined with other heat-clearing and toxicity-relieving medicinals.

[ Usage and Dosage ]: 4.5-9 g. 30-60g of the fresh form. The appropriate amount for external application. Place directly on the wounded area.

[ Precautions ]: Used with caution for spleen and stomach deficiency-cold syndromes.

 小蓟 为菊科植物刺儿菜Cirsium setosum(Willd.) MB.或刻叶刺儿菜Cephanoplos setosum(Willd.) Kitarn.的地上部分或根。全国大部分地区均产。夏、秋季花期采集。除去杂质，晒干，生用或炒炭用。
