This medicinal is the dried placenta of healthy postpartum women. The fresh placenta is processed beginning with it being cut from the blood vessels, then it is washed repeatedly, steamed or boiled for given time period and dried. It is used in its fresh form or then ground into powder to be used as a medicine.

[ Medicinal Properties ]: Sweet, salty, warm; relate to heart, lung and kidney meridians.

[Medicinal Efficacies ]: Tonify kidney and replenish essence; nourish blood and replenish qi.

[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Impotence, spermatorrhea, sterility, limpness of the knees and feet, dizziness and tinnitus      In this case, it is prescribed with Guiban, Duzhong and Niuxi, as in the Dazao Pills.

2. Deficiency syndrome of both qi and blood       To treat sallow, emaciation, lassitude, lack of strength, post partum agalactia, due to insufficiency of both  qi and blood, it is ground into a powder, alone, for oral administration. The fresh form can  e thoroughly cooked and used by itself or it can be combined with Renshen and Danggui.

3. Deficiency of lung and kidney, cough and dyspnea     In this case, it is combined with Renshen, Gejie and Dongchongxiacao.

[ Usage and Dosage ]: 1.5-3g. It is ground into powder and processed into a capsule or bolus. When cooking fresh placenta, the whole or half of it is administered at one time.

[ Precautions ]: It should be used in combination, in cases of yin-deficiency with effulgent-fire.

[Annotation]: Qidai 脐带 This medicinal is the umbilical cord of the fetus. After being washed clean, it is cooked with Jinyinhua, Gancao and yellow wine, and then it is baked until dry. It is then ready to be consumed. It is sweet, salty and warm, and relates to the kidneymeridian. It is able to tonify the kidney, receive qi and astringe sweating and usually treats cough and night sweating due to kidney deficiency, Usage and Dosage :1-2piece for decoction; 1.5-3g for powder.

紫河车为健康产妇的胎盘。将取得的新鲜胎盘，割开血管，用清水反复洗净，蒸或置沸水中略煮后，烘干，研粉用。亦可鲜用。
