It is the carbonization of the leafstalks of Trachycarpus fortumei (Hook.f.) H. Wendl.,family Arecaceae. it is collected during September and October. Theextending parts of the leafstalk and the sheath cut off, the fibrous palm hair removed, dried in the sun, cut into pieces , it is calcined into charcoal for use.
[ Medicinal Properties ]: Bitter, astringent,neutral; relate to liver, lung and big intestine meridians.
[ Meidicnal Efficacies ]: Stop bleeding by astringing.
[ Clinical Applications ]: Bleeding It is the most significant medicinal of stopping bleeding by astringing, and is used for various bleedings and is better for bleeding without stasis, as it is astringent but has the disadvatage of retaining pathogenic qi. For haematemesis and emptysis, it can be used together with blood-cooling hemostatics, such as with Xiaoji, Zhizi, as in the Shihui Powder. In cases of metrorrhagia and metrostaxis due to failure of spleen to control blood, and insecurity of Dai( thoroughfare) and Ren (conception) meridians, it is combined together with Huangqi, Baishu, such as in the Guchong Decoction. For patients with hematochezia, it is often combined with Aiye, Shujizi or Fuzi.
[ Usage and Dosage ]: 3-9g. 1-1.5g for ground powder.
棕榈炭为棕榈科植物棕榈Trachycarpus fortunei(HooK.f.) H. Wendl的叶鞘纤维(即叶柄基底部之棕毛)。主产于广东、福建、云南、甘肃、贵州、浙江、台湾等地。全年可采,一般多在9~10月间采收,以陈久者为佳。采集时,割取叶柄下延部分及鞘片,除去纤维状棕毛,晒干,切成小片,煅炭用。
