Qingdai is the dired powder or conglomeration processed from leaves or stems of Baphicacanthus cusia ( Nees ) Bremek., pertaining to Acanthaceae, Polygonum tinctorium Ait., pertaining to Polygonaceae, or Isatis indigotica Fort., pertaining to Cruciferae. The best is from Fujian Province, known as " Jian Qingdai". It is punded into powder for medical purpose.

[ Medicinal Properties ]: Salty and bitter; related to liver meridian.

[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Clear heat and relieve toxicity; cool blood and resolve macula; clear liver, purge fire; tranquilize.

[ Usage and Dosage ]: 1.5-3g. As indissoluble in water, usualy it is used in pills or infused. Also it can be used externally.

[ Precautions ]: Be cautious with cold. It is bitter and cold, so should not take for log time or over dosage, otherwise stomach qi will be damaged.
 
[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Warm toxinosis, macula, blood heat, haematemesis and epistaxis    It is good at treating macula due to warm toxinosis, combined with raw Shigao, Shengdihuang and Zhizi; for example in Qingdai Shigao Decoction. By itself, it treats haematemesis and epistaxis due to accelerated blood circulation caused by blodd heat, or combined with Shengdihuang, Mudanpi and Baimaogen.
 
2. Sore throat, mumps, heat toxin, sores and ulcers     By itself, it treats prosperous heat toxin causing swollen and sore throat, inflammation of throat, or combined with Banlangen and Gancao. In case of sores, ulcers, swelling and pain of mumps due to heat toxin, it is combined with Xuanshen, Jingyinhua and Lianqiao.
 
3.Cough, chest pain and blood-tinged sputum     It treats invasin of lung by liver fire, manifesting as cough, chest pain, blood-tinged sputum, usually combined with Haigefen; for example in Daige Powder. Also it treats cough due to lung heat, manifesting as yellow and sticky sputum, combined with Haifushi, Gualuoren and Chuanbeimu; for example in Qingdai Haishi Pills.
 
4. Summer-heat, fright epilepsy, convulsions and spasms       For fright epilepsy due to summer-heat, it is usually combined with Gancao and Huashi; for example in Biyu Powder. And for infantile convulsions and spasms, usually it is combined with Gouteng and Niuhuang; for example in Liangjing Pills.

青黛为爵床科植物马蓝Baphicacanthus cusia (Nees) Bremek、蓼科植物蓼蓝Polygonum tinctorium Ait或十字花科植物菘蓝1satis indigotica Fort.的叶或茎叶经加工制得的干燥粉末或团块。主产于福建、云南、江苏、安徽、河北等地。福建所产品质最优,称“建青黛”。秋季采收以上植物的落叶,加水浸泡,至叶腐烂,叶落脱皮时,捞去落叶,加适量石灰乳,充分搅拌至浸液由乌绿色转为深红色时,捞取液面泡沫,晒干而成。研细用。
      
【药性】咸,寒。归肝、肺经。       
 
【功效】清热解毒,凉血消斑,清肝泻火,定惊。       
 
【应用】        1.温毒发斑,血热吐衄。本品寒能清热,咸以入血,故有清热解毒,凉血,止血,消斑之效。善治温毒发斑,常与生地、生石膏、栀子等药同用,如青黛石膏汤(《通俗伤寒论》);若治血热妄行的吐血、衄血,常与生地、牡丹皮、白茅根等药同用。       
 
2.咽痛口疮,火毒疮疡。本品有清热解毒,凉血消肿之效。用治热毒炽盛,咽喉肿痛,喉痹者,常与板蓝根、甘草同用;若口舌生疮,多与冰片同用,撒敷患处;用治火毒疮疡,痄腮肿痛,可与寒水石共研为末,外敷患处,如青金散(《普济方》)。       
 
 3.咳嗽胸痛,痰中带血。本品咸寒,主清肝火,又泻肺热,且能凉血止血。故主治肝火犯肺,咳嗽胸痛,痰中带血,常与海蛤粉同用,如黛蛤散(《卫生鸿宝》)。若肺热咳嗽,痰黄而稠者,可配海浮石、瓜蒌仁、川贝母等同用,如青黛海石丸(《证因脉治》)。       
 
 4.暑热惊痫,惊风抽搐。本品咸寒,善清肝火,祛暑热,有息风止痉之功。用治暑热惊痫,常与甘草、滑石同用,如碧玉散(《宣明论方》);用治小儿惊风抽搐,多与钩藤、牛黄等同用,如凉惊丸(《小儿药证直诀》)。       
 
【用法用量】内服1.5~3g,本品难溶于水,一般作散剂冲服,或入丸剂服用。外用适量。       
 
【使用注意】胃寒者慎用。        【鉴别用药】大青叶为菘蓝叶;板蓝根为菘蓝或马蓝的根;青黛为马蓝、蓼蓝或菘蓝的茎叶经加工制得的粉未。三者大体同出一源,功效亦相近,皆有清热解毒、凉血消斑之作用。相比较而言,大青叶凉血消斑力强;板蓝根解毒利咽效著;青黛清肝定惊功胜。       
 
【古籍摘要】        1.《开宝本草》:“主解诸药毒,小儿诸热,惊痫发热,天行头痛寒热,煎水研服之。亦摩敷热疮、恶肿、金疮、下血、蛇犬等毒。”       
2.《本经逢原》:“青黛,泻肝胆,散郁火,治温毒发斑及产后热痢下重,……。”       
 
【现代研究】        1.化学成分:本品含靛蓝,靛玉红,靛棕,靛黄,鞣酸,β-谷甾醇,蛋白质和大量无机盐。       
2.药理作用:本品具有抗癌作用,其有效成分靛玉红,对动物移植性肿瘤有中等强度的抑制作用。对金黄色葡萄球菌、炭疽杆菌、志贺氏痢疾杆菌、霍乱弧菌均有抗菌作用。靛蓝尚有一定的保肝作用。       
3.临床研究:据报道,青黛可用于多种疾病,如:用青黛粉15g,以大黄水煎液冲洗后保留灌肠,治疗急性盆腔炎15例,均获痊愈(国医论坛1997,4:27);用青黛、冰片、沉香等研末混合,蜂蜜调匀,置舌根部以唾液徐徐咽下,缓解食道贲门癌梗阻51例,46例有不同程度的症状改善(江苏中医,1996,2:20);用青黛与白矾以6:1之比例组方,炼蜜为丸,口服,治疗急性黄疸型肝炎125例、慢性活动性肝炎4例,临床效果显著,且未见毒副反应(新中医2000,3:41)。
此外,青黛尚可治疗间接胆红素增高症、慢性粒细胞白血病、癫痫、鼻前庭炎、消化道出血、褥疮、睾丸炎、肛门湿疹以及老年性阴道炎等。       
 4.不良反应:靛玉红可引起强烈腹泻和便血。
