Shijueming is the shell of Haliotis diversicolor Reeve, Haliotis discus hannai Ino, Haliotis ovina Gmelin, Haliotis ruber (Leach),Haliotis asinine Linnaeus, or Haliotis laevigata ( Donnovan), pertaining to Haliotidae. It is collected in sumer and fall. After the flesh is removed, it is washed and dried. The raw form is used or after calcined. It is pounded for administration.
[ Medicinal Properties ]: Salty and cold; relate to liver meridian.
[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Pacifying liver and subdue yang; clear liver and improve vision.
[ Clinical Applications ]: 1. Dizziness, dizzy vision and headache Shijueming also can nourish liver yin, so it is good at treating vertigo due to deficiency of liver-kidney yin causing hyperactivity of liver yang, and it is usually combined with Baishao and Shengdihuang; for example , in Ejiao Jizihuang Decoction. For hyperactivity of liver yang, manifesting as heat, dizziness, headache, irritation and bad temper, it is combined with Xiakucao and Huangqin.
2. Reddish eyes, nebula and blurred vision It treats reddish and swollen eyes with pain due to up-flaming of liver fire, in combination with Huanglian and Longdan. For reddish eyes due to wind-heat and nebula, usually it is combined with Chantui and Juhua. In case of blurred vision and night blindess due to liver blood deficiency , usually it is combined with Shudihuang and Gouqizi.
Calcined Shijueming also can astringe, restrain acidity, stop pain and stop bleeding, to treat stomach pain due to gastric hyperacidity and bleeding due to traumatic injuries.
[ Usage and Dosage ]: 3-15g. It is pounded and decocted early when it is used in decoction. It is used in the raw form to subdue or clear the liver. For eye drops, it is calcined and refine with water.
[ Precautions ]: Due to its salty and cold nature, Shijueming tends to damage the spleen and stomach. As a result, be cautious with deficiency-cold in the spleen and stomach with poor appetite and loose stool.
[ Medicinal Comparison ]: Similarities: Both Shijueming and Juemingzi can clear liver and improve vision to treat reddish and swollen eyes with pain, and nebula due to liver heat.
Differences: Shijueming is salty and cold, of heavy property, so it can cool and calm the liver and nourish liver yin to treat eye disease for deficiency and excess types, especially for blood-deficiency and liver-heat, manifesting as photophobia, blurred vision and glaucoma. Juemingzi is bitter and cold, and is good at clearing the liver and purging fire to improve vision, so usually treats reddish and swollen eyes with pain, due to excess fire in the liver meridian.
