Zhuye is the leaf of Phyllostachys nigra(Lodd.) Munro var. henonis( Mitf.) Stapf ex Rendle, pertaining to Poaceae. It is collected in all seasons. The raw form is used.

[ Medicinal Properties ]: Sweet, pungent, bland and cold; relate to heart , stomach and small intestine meridians.

[ Medicinal Efficacies ]: Clear heat, relieve agitation; generate fluids and promote urination.

[Usage and Dosage ]: 6-15g. When it is used in raw form, the dosage is 15-30g in fresh form.

[Clinical Applilcations ]: 1. Warm disease, agitation and thirst    Zhuye treats consumption of fluids in warm disease, manifesting as agitation and thirst, usually in combinatin with Shigao, Zhimu and Xunshen; for example in Qingwen Baidu Decoction. It also treats lingering heat with damage of fluids and qi, in the later stage of warm disease, in combination with Renshen  and Maidong; for example in Zhuye Shigao Decoction.

2. Aphtha and reddish urine     It treats transmission of heart heat to small intestine, manifesting as scanty and reddish urine with astringent pain, usually in combination with Mutong and Shengdihuang; for example inn Daochi Powder. Zhuyejuanxin treats heat entering pericardium, manifesting as coma and delirium, in combination with Lianzixin and Liaoqiaoxin; for example in Qinggong Decoction.

竹叶为禾本科植物淡竹Phyllostachys nigra (Lodd.) Munro var. henonis (Mitf.) Stapf ex Rendle的叶。其卷而未放的幼叶，称竹叶卷心。产于长江流域各省。随时可采，宜用鲜品。
